Arjun Mahendro

Badmaash

Arjun Mahendro grew up in a humble Indian home in Toronto, Canada. Raised with his brother Nakul by their chef father Pawan, and restaurant-accountant mother, the Mahendro brothers body the phrase “born to do this.” Badmaash, the acclaimed restaurant they started with their father, opened its doors in the spring of 2013 in Downtown Los Angeles. The menu offers traditional Indian dishes, alongside modern Indian fare. Arjun & Nakul hope they can use the success & attention Badmaash has brought them to change the way people think about Indian food & people in America. A second location on Fairfax opened in May, 2019.

Chiara Soldati

La Scolca

Chiara Soldati is a fourth generation winemaker at her family’s estate, La Scolca, located in Gavi in the southern Piedmont region of Italy. La Scolca is celebrating their 100th anniversary in 2019. A graduate of the University of Genoa with a degree in Law she joined the family business in 1995 in winemaking, export and marketing.

Erin Landsberg, FWS

American Wine & Spirits

Erin Landsberg was born and raised in Los Angeles and has been in the Food & Wine Industry for 15 years. First in restaurants, industry working and taking The Wine House in West LA for over 3 years and currently working in distribution as the LA Wine Manager of the Fine Wine Division of SGWS, American Wine & Spirits for the past 5 years, accumulating certifications for WSET2, MS1, CSW, CSS, Sake, IWP (Italian Wine Professional) and FWS (French Wine Scholar).

Genevieve Ko

Cooking Editor for the LA Times

Genevieve Ko is the cooking editor for the Los Angeles Times. She has written over a dozen cookbooks with notable chefs and is the author of “Better Baking.” Ko graduated from Yale University and has been a food writer, editor and recipe developer for national food media outlets, including NYT Cooking. She was born and raised in Monterey Park on dim sum, onigiri and chimichangas.

Giorgia Sinatra

Pasta Sisters

Giorgia Sinatra is the creative director for Pasta Sisters, where her mother, Paola Da Re is the executive chef. A family business, Pasta Sisters has expanded to two Los Angeles locations, one in mid-city and one in Culver City, and Giorgia’s creative direction and entrepreneurial leadership has been crucial to the success, alongside her brother, and of course, their mother’s cooking.

Ira Norof, CSE, CWE

Wine & Spirits

In 1976 Ira Norof’s career began in a wine shop and he became a Sommelier in a Beverly Hills restaurant. In 1983 he joined Southern Glazer’s Wine & Spirits and in 1996 was named the Director of Education of California. He is a CWE and a CSE. He holds a diploma from the Bordeaux Wine School, is a certified International Bordeaux Educator, and a certified Cognac Educator. He is a guest lecturer at Cal Poly Pomona’s School of Hospitality. He served as the President of the Society of Wine Educators, has been on the Board of Directors of the LA Chapter of the AIWF. He is actively involved in many wine-related charity events.

Lucas Kwan Peterson

LA Times

Lucas Kwan Peterson is a columnist and video producer for the Food section. Before coming to the Los Angeles Times, he wrote the New York Times’ Frugal Traveler column for nearly three years and hosted and produced more than 100 episodes of the food series “Dining on a Dime” for Eater. He is from Oak Park, Ill., and graduated from Williams College.

Mark Oldman

LA Times Wine Club

Mark Oldman is a wine expert, author, entrepreneur, speaker, media personality, and someone who delights in helping people simplify complex subjects. In the world of wine, he is known for his ability to unravel wine’s complexities with a potent blend of entertainment, style, and humor. Mark’s enduring, award-winning books are considered by many to be best of their kind. His standing invitations to the country’s top food festivals and consistently sold-out events attest to his position as one of gastronomy’s most captivating speakers. Mark brings the ruckus to audiences at major fairs, corporations, and institutions around the world.

Paola Da Re

Pasta Sisters

Paola Da Re is the executive chef at Pasta Sisters. Her passion for food began as she learned to cook alongside her siblings, from their mother, in the small Norther Italian town of Padova. Her mother’s recipes inform some of Pasta Sisters most beloved dishes. Paola’s passion for cooking started to take the shape of a business at the end of the 2014, two years after she moved to Los Angeles. Paola's cooking ability, her son Francesco's entrepreneurship and her daughter Giorgia's creativity were the perfect ingredients for a successful family business.

Pawan Mahendro

Badmaash

Born and raised in Amritsar, Punjab, India, chef Pawan Mahendro pursued a path in international culinary cuisine. Upon graduating at the top of his class, Pawan honed his skills in Indian, French and Chinese cooking at the Taj Mahal Intercontinental Hotel. Following a move to Toronto, Pawan opened Jaipur Grill in 2002and it quickly became Toronto’s premier Indian dining destination. Inspired by his sons Nakul and Arjun’s desire to create an unrivaled, “badass” dining experience, Pawan and his sons opened Badmaash in spring of 2013 in downtown Los Angeles. A second location on Fairfax opened in May of 2019.

After attaining a degree in History, Troy Chappel joined SGWS in 1989 and has held various positions in sales management. He has attained various certifications that include CSW, CSS and FWS (French Wine Scholar) where his history knowledge is interwoven into product knowledge.

Andrea Chang

LA Times

Andrea Chang is the deputy Food editor for the Los Angeles Times. She joined the newspaper in 2007 and has covered food, technology and retail; she was also an assistant editor in the Business section. Chang graduated from the Medill School of Journalism at Northwestern University and has written for the St. Petersburg Times, the Oregonian and the Mercury News. She grew up in Cupertino, Calif., and will happily eat anything – except fresh ginger.

Courtney Kaplan

Ototo & Tsubaki

Courtney Kaplan’s career began in a yakitori restaurant while abroad in Tokyo. Upon returning to New York, she spent several years at the East Village sake bar Decibel. In 2004, Courtney joined the opening management team of EN Japanese Brasserie. After staging with a sommelier in Paris, Courtney became a sommelier at Bestia, while also working part-time at Domaine LA. In 2017, she and her business partner, Charles Namba, opened Tsubaki, a classic izakaya in Echo Park. In 2019, they opened OTOTO, next door to Tsubaki. Courtney is fluent in Japanese and worked as a translator for Nihon Keizai Shimbun, the world’s largest financial newspaper.

Jenn Harris is a senior writer for the Los Angeles Times Food section. She has a bachelor’s in literary journalism from the UC Irvine and a master’s in journalism from the University of Southern California. Harris covers restaurant news, dining trends, chefs and cocktails. She’s also the unofficial fried chicken queen of Los Angeles. She once visited 22 bars and restaurants in a single day for a story. Wes Hagen is winemaker for J. Wilkes Wines and Brand Ambassador for the Miller Family Wine Company. Wes lectures on wine and wine history all over the country and has been featured in presentations at CalTech, the Smithsonian, Cornell University and the San Francisco Wine School. This year Wes will present a brand new presentation on the relationship of alcohol, and wine specifically, on the development of democracy, science, enlightenment values, family and relationships. Start drinking and start thinking: Wes will also bring a lovely selection of his wines and those from his brands for you to taste.

Kim Prince

Hotville Hot Chicken

Kim Prince is the owner of LA’s Hotville Chicken™, bringing her family’s deeply rooted Nashville hot chicken creations to Los Angeles. Her great-great uncle, along with his brothers, started the hot chicken tradition in Nashville with the BBQ Hot Chicken Shack in 1936, later changing to Prince’s Hot Chicken Shack. Prince studied the business needs and worked with local restaurateurs before establishing her Los Angeles pop-up. She does plan to establish a brick and mortar location–her family history and legacy shows that hot chicken is not a trend and she knows it will be welcomed for years to come.

Amy Scattergood

LA Times

Amy Scattergood is a staff writer for the Food section of the Los Angeles Times. She has degrees from Yale Divinity School, the Iowa Writers Workshop and the Cordon Bleu and has written a book of poetry and co-written a whole grain cookbook. Although originally from Iowa, she’s lived in L.A. for a long time now and will continue to do so, as long as tacos and the Pacific Ocean exist.

Chris Bianco

Tartine Bianco

Acclaimed chef Chris Bianco has helped spawn a generation of independent and artisanal pizzerias, lending his advice, wisdom and food philosophies to dozens of fellow chefs and restaurateurs. In 2005, Chris opened Pane Bianco, about four miles from the Pizzeria. In 2016, Chris opened Tratto, a rustic, Italian-inspired restaurant located next door to the second location of Pizzeria Bianco. Among many awards and accolades, Chris received the James Beard Foundation Award for Best Chef: Southwest in 2003, and in 2013 and 2014, the Foundation nominated Pizzeria Bianco in the Outstanding Restaurant category.

Chef Jorge “El Joy” Alvarez-Tostado is one of the proprietors of Tacos 1986, along with Victor Delgado. The hit taqueria has been written up by the Los Angeles Times, LA Taco, and Easter, among others.

Lora Tagliarina, CSW

Lora Tagliarina began her career in the wine and hospitality industry nearly 20 years ago when she discovered her passion for wine while working in the restaurant industry. She attained her Certified Sommelier from the Court of Master Sommeliers while working at The Breakers Resort in Palm Beach in 2009. She also has her WSET Advanced Certification, CSS, and CSW. In 2011, Lora left the hospitality industry to join Coastal Pacific Wine & Spirits, a division of Southern Glazer’s, as a Moët Hennessy Portfolio Manager in FL. In 2014, Lora relocated to CA where she is currently in charge of Learning & Development for CA, HI, and WA.

Teresa Montaño

Otoño

Teresa Montaño is a New Mexico-born, Los Angeles-based Chef, best known for her modern Spanished cuisine. Her first restaurant, Ración, was highly lauded by acclaimed food writers and critics, alike, including Jonathan Gold, Amy Scattergood, and Besha Rodell. The restaurant was included in the celebrated LA Times 101 Best Restaurant for the entirety of Teresa's tenure. An exploratory tour of Europe which included research in Copenhagen, Denmark, Barcelona and Valencia as well as pop-up concepts in Puglia, Italy, inspired Teresa to bring her newest restaurant, Otoño, to life in Los Angeles.

Tobin Shea

Tobin Shea, Bar Director for Redbird and Vibiana, is known for his elegantly crafted cocktails. Shea’s opened two Silverlake favorites: The Garage and El Cid. Shea then moved to Orange County to assist with the cocktail program for the restaurant group P&D Concepts. Before joining Redbird and Vibiana, he relocated to Manhattan Beach to work with Julian Cox and Josh Goldman, of the Soigné Group. Redbird and Vibiana’s extensive cocktail menu features well-balanced, bespoke renditions of classics and has garnered Shea awards such as Time Out’s Best Restaurant Bar Program in 2017.

Victor Delgado
