It’s a little known fact that Matua founding brothers Bill and Ross Spence played a major role in establishing New Zealand’s reputation as a major winemaking region. Not only were they the first vintners in New Zealand to really match microclimate and terroir to specific varietal growing requirements, they also were the first to commercially plant (1969) and produce (1974) Sauvignon Blanc—now the signature wine of New Zealand—in their homeland.

Today a large percentage of New Zealand’s total Sauvignon Blanc production is based on the second clone, which Ross identified and planted—now classified and recorded as Mass Selection (MS) clone.

The selection of “Matua” as the winery’s name was fortuitous those many years ago. In the native Maori tongue Matua means “head of the family” and “first,” which has proved to be an appropriate name for a brand that has consistently led the way in the New Zealand wine industry. Thanks in part to the pioneering efforts of Matua Winery in the 1970s, New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc will continue to stun the world with its quality and provide a solid base for further opportunities for other grape varietals.
