Angelenos got an early start celebrating Cinco de Mayo at the Spirits of the Times: Tequila. Held at the famed tequila bar, Las Perlas, the event brought tequila connoisseurs and casual drinkers out to try unlimited samples of some the world’s best agave-based spirits. Tequila ambassadors from each brand offered insight and expertise while the bar served unlimited hand-crafted tequila cocktails.
BEST COCKTAIL“Karmagranate Ginger Margarita” (Karma Tequila)Ingredients: 1 1/2 oz (6 ct) Karma Tequila Silver 1oz (4ct) Orange liquor or triple sec 1/2 oz (2 ct) Fresh pomegranate juice ½ oz (2ct) ginger syrup 2 lime wedge Fresh ginger root Directions (by glass): In a mixing glass place a pinch of fresh ginger root. Add the ginger syrup and muddle it softly…the ginger has a very strong flavor and you don’t want to overdo it! Following the recipe, add the tequila, the triple sec, the fresh pomegranate, and the juice of two limes. Fill the shaker with ice. Shake it until cold, and then strain into a chilled apple sugar rimmed long drink glass.

Ingredients:
2 oz blanco tequila 1 oz simple syrup 1/2 lime (quartered) 2 jalapeno wheels 3 Barritt’s Ginger Beer Directions: Muddle limes, jalapenos and simple syrup. Add tequila and shake. Strain into glass and top with Barritt’s Ginger Beer. Orange and Ginger Margarita (Herradura)
Ingredients:
2 oz. Herradura Silver Tequila .5 oz. Ginger Syrup 2 oz. Fresh Orange Juice .5 oz. Fresh Lime Juice Directions: Combine all ingredients into shaker. Shake hard, strain into an old fashioned glass. Garnish with a lime wedge and nail of ginger. Tequila Julep (El Tesoro)
Ingredients:
2 pt El Tesoro Plata .75 pt Celery honey* Celery leaves lightly dusted in chili powder for garnish Directions: Build like a julep over crushed ice and garnish *Celery Honey 3 pts fine strained fresh celery juice 1 pt good local honey Stir together until mixed, should be a nice green color if the honey you use isn’t too dark. Basque-tille Day (Chinaco)
Ingredients:
1 ½ oz. Chinaco Reposado ¾ oz. Torani Amer ½ oz. Maurin Quina 1 Dash Miracle Mile “Castilian Bitters” 1 Dash Fee Brothers Black Walnut Bitters 1 Bar Spoon Domaine Sathenay Crème de Cassis Directions: Add all ingredients into an ice-filled cocktail mixer. Stir for approximately 20 seconds. (40 revolutions) Strain into a well chilled cocktail coupe. Garnish with a Luxardo Maraschino cherry. |
